Pathways to Success - Relational Currency

Pathways to Success

I recently attended the Pathways to Success workshop hosted by Ferazzi Greenlight and the University of Phoenix.  The workshop was astounding!  It was structured around the idea that using a relational approach to business instead of a transactional approach will net a greater financial profit as well as a richer client/business relationship.

I spent the better part of my Saturday learning about mindsets, currency and intimacy; all of which are critical in maintaining an effective relationship.

Mindsets are driven by the desire to make other people successful.  Mindsets include key elements such as generosity, candor, and intimacy.  Generosity is the currency of relationships according to Ferazzi Greenlight.  The more valuable the currency, the faster the relationship will develop.  Intimacy refers to the value exchanged in the relationship.  Candor is demonstrated in a relationship when you can tell a person what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear.

Currency involves functions that are low risk and easy such as giving someone a sincere compliment. Currency nets great rewards.  Currency is comprised of elements such as professional, and personal. Professional involves helping the person you are working with do a better job.  Personal involves helping the person with their health, wealth or family.

Intimacy is driven by loyalty.  Loyalty increases with the level of intimacy involved.  The levels of intimacy (loyalty pyramid) ascend from authenticity to interests and passions, to dreams and aspirations, to struggles and challenges, to fears and vulnerabilities, all the way to mutual understanding.  The goal is to seek a higher level of intimacy by working your way up the loyalty pyramid.
